Random bits of life

A while ago, I posted a farewell to heels. Well, after this morning, I’ve concluded that it’s a farewell to crap heels. Because today I am wearing my “designer” heels and my feet are as comfy as ever. Another pair makes its way to the Goodwill bag. Probably just another lame excuse on my part to spend the pretty penny on shoes. Life is short, n’est pas?

Recuperating

It’s been mellow May – both Mads and I are getting over colds. Hers was especially nasty – stuffiness, crustiness, grumpiness. Thank goodness she’s back to herself and sleeping through the night again.

Mads and I paid a visit to our friend Cassie at her 5y birthday party this past Saturday while S was enjoy a b-day massage. She didn’t get to enjoy the lumpia or pancit – in due time – but she enjoyed playing with Cassie and her brother, Gabe (2y) and the birthday balloons. As we were getting ready to leave, Mads was whisked away to another room only to come back with a $20 bill in her pocket. Apparently, it’s Filipino tradition to give a gift to a new baby that enters the house. (Something new I learned.) S & I both joked that we need to go visit all my Filipino relatives now! 🙂

See food

Later that day, I took S out to dinner to celebrate another year gone by. There were a couple of restaurants that he hadn’t been to, so I decided to NOT do French and took him to Farallon (named after the tiny islands right outside of SF Bay). Again, the restaurant did not disappoint. I didn’t get to taste it, but S’ seared fois gras starter with grilled pineapple looked delicious. Normally, I not a big fan of the fois gras (gasp!) – it’s just too rich for my taste. But if it’s seared and served on toast points with a fig spread, yum!, I could (sadly) eat that all day. Since we were celebrating a b-day, we HAD to get dessert – so we finally agreed on the Coconut Banana split with toasted coconut, carmelized bananas, dulce de luche and fudge sauce. Are you drooling yet? A wise decision – it was VERY good.

Speaking of food, miss Mads is coming along quite nicely in the self-feeding-expanding-her-palate department. She’s moved on to chunkier baby foods and finger foods. We started with defrosted peas and carrots and banana chunks. She wasn’t too fond of the babybel (S was happy about that), but ADORES string cheese. She’s also munching on the fruit (apple cinnamon) and veggie (sweet potato) puffs by Gerber. She also gets fresh fruit chunks at day care: mango, pear, banana. Last night I gave her a chunk of baked teriyaki tofu. She wasn’t too sure about it, but she ate it nonetheless.

She’s adjusted to her new day care pretty well and now that she’s not sick anymore, I’m able to walk there with Lucie and pick her up. Before, I’d take the Bjorn and walk up the steep hill back home…but figuring Lucie would get a longer w-a-l-k if we went the longer route, I take the MacLaren (stroller, not sports car). Easier but not – pushing 30lbs uphill is quite tiring. At least I’m getting some kind of workout out of it, right?

How big is your carbon footprint?

In an effort to green-ify our day-to-day life, I called up Sunset Scavenger and requested a kitchen food scrap bin. Later that week a little green bin was delivered to our house (with a small supply of compostable bin liners). If you live in SF, request one. It’s FREE, it’s small enough to fit under your sink and the bin liners are available at numerous stores in the city. Not majorly effective, but every little bit helps, right?
