Random bits of life

My thoughts are with the families of the tube bombing victims…

S and I were at the King’s Cross / St. Pancras rail stations in January for our trips to Cambridge and Brighton, respectively. I know that we weren’t “there” or “just there”, it’s still a bit unnerving. There was a lot of construction going on at those stations in January, just wondering if it had been completed already.

Speculation here, but if we had only kept our butts out of Iraq…and I will end it there.

In other news…

I went in for a much needed haircut 2 weeks ago. I was telling Erin, stylist extraordinaire, that the baby hairs at my hairline were bugging me (because they would stand straight up), so she layered my hair and…gasp!…cut bangs! For the men out there, bangs are a big deal for women, which often involves lots of research and opinions from other women. S likes the new style and I do, too. However, it wasn’t until last week I realized that I have the “Rachel” haircut. Oh well…my hair isn’t as straight and flat anymore.

Also, needing a trim, S paid a visit to AnneMarie the next day. After a trim and some smelly (and expensive) hair “glue”, S emerged with a fauxhawk. It’s cute and very different. But S likes it, so I like it, too.

We also paid a visit to Pottery Barn. After (almost) 5 years together and 4 different residences, we will be sleeping on the floor no more! I’m happy to say that we’ve purchased a bedroom set, after 4 years of looking. I couldn’t find the description that was in the store, but it described the Sumatra bed as a mix between Asian influences and French flea market. What better bed to suit us?! We picked up our nightstands this past weekend and the bed and dresser are being delivered this coming weekend! Yay! No more mattress/box spring on the floor!!!

Landscaping will be soon added to our resumes. Last weekend, we pulled out the fugly juniper bushes in front of the house. Sylvain removed the roots (I would have helped, but I was hosting a bridal shower for my cousin. Honestly!) and we’ve purchased the anti-weed fabric, erosion pins and bark. Lots of bark. We also bought some plants, but I’ve realized that only 2 of them will withstand the wind. So the star jasmine will have to be planted in the back soon! So the laying of the fabric, bark and planting of the plants takes place this weekend.

The joys of homeownership – there’s always something that needs to be done!

In San Francisco, the fine for not picking up after your pooch is a whopping $319! On the other hand it’s only $91 for the human variety.

Because I am far from one. Found this cool site from MetroDad

create your own visited country map

I’ve visited 10 countries, and that only accounts for 4% of the WORLD! 4%? A measley 4%? How sad is that?

This is a bit better, but not by much…

8 states, 9, if you include Washington DC.

As you may or may not know, I love to cook and bake. So after browsing some of the foodie blogs I read, I stumbled upon this meme (fancy, weblog word for those “how well do you know your friend-type” quiz; also French for “same”) and thought I’d share it with y’all.

What is your first memory of baking/cooking on your own?

A honey mint banana bread from a Winnie the Pooh cookbook. I was told it was good, so I kept on baking them. I also tried to make some sort of cookie from the same book, but they didn’t turn out,or so I thought, and I threw them all out! Later on, I found out that they were florentine-type cookies – so technically, they turned out just fine.

Who had the most influence on your cooking?

Silly question…my mom.

Do you have an old photo as ‘evidence’ of an early exposure to the culinary world and would you like to share it?

Don’t think so…I think I have plenty of pictures of me eating, but not cooking. Maybe I’ll post one later.

Mageiricophobia – do you suffer from any cooking phobia, a dish that makes your palms sweat?

It was roast turkey – but I cooked my first turkey last year and it came out just wonderful (at least I thought so)!

What would be your most valued or used kitchen gadgets and/or what was the biggest let down?

Oh lord, too many too name: microplane graters, food processor, stand mixer, Baker’s Joy, my gargantuan All Clad pan, my Le Creuset dutch oven, apple corer, silicone mats, and more! The biggest let down: pot with pasta insert and steamer basket – I’ve gotten many a steam burns from that thing.

Name some funny or weird food combinations/dishes you really like – and probably no one else!

When I was younger, I would dip my fries into my frozen yogurt and I thought it was delish!

What are the three eatables or dishes you simply don’t want to live without?

Eatables: sushi, pasta, chocolate
Dishes: mac ‘n cheese, steak au bordelaise with frites, roast chicken with all the fixin’s

Your favorite ice-cream…

Ciao bella Hazelnut and Tahitian Vanilla

You will probably never eat…

Tripe, oysters, brain

Your own signature dish…

S would say it’s my lasagna. I guess it would be that – it’s the one thing that I make often enough for it to become a signature dish.

A common ingredient you just can’t bring yourself to stomach…

Cilantro. I just don’t like it.

Which one culture’s food would you most like to sample on its home turf?

Indian
