Random bits of life

What a busy weekend. I had Friday off. How many people really get Good Friday off? (Other than some Catholic school teachers.) It’s a trade-off for not having MLK Jr. Day off. It seems that the big wigs here don’t really think that celebrating civil rights is important. Figures. What do you expect for a company based in Shallow Alto? How can you NOT have MLK Jr. Day off?…

…Friday night was another farewell to freedom night out (aka the bachelorette party) for my dear friend Yolanda. Dinner at AsiaSF and dancing at Holy Cow! I had not been to Holy Cow in 4 years. Perhaps that is a good thing. Being there brought me back to my party days in Tijuana. Sigh…

…If you’re curious, visit Yoli & Craig’s wedding website here. I have to admit – she’s pretty composed for a bride-to-be. Lord knows I was on the verge of becoming bridezilla the weeks before our wedding…

…Easter Funday was nice. The fam came over and noshed. We had way too much food, as usual. And to end things on an un-traditional, but fun note, Sylvain taught us all how to play Texas Hold-’em. How many families gather around table to play poker and blackjack on Easter Sunday?…

…Lucie was so pooped from running on the beach yesterday morning, that she didn’t get up to pee. So our new chair-and-a-half has been “anointed”:o(

…BTW, I did forget about my Ebay auction for the Von Dutch hat. Darn it.

So, today was our interview at INS to (somewhat) complete the green card process for Sylvain.
All last night I was envisioning some sort of tortuous version of The Newlywed Game. Alas, another urban legend. The simplest questions were asked and answered. The INS officer didn’t even want to keep the photocopied photos of our weddings and honeymoon – after all that time I stood in front of the copier. Oh well…
By the way, yes, he is a provisional permanent resident now – we have to check back in two years. He’d better behave. ;o)

If you were keeping track, the Bushman of Fisherman’s Wharf has been acquitted of his so-called wrong doings. Don’t you think that the SFPD have better things to do than write up a tourist nuisance?

I can’t forget about my e-bay auction for the pink and black (it looks brown on the site) Von Dutch hat!

Finally, outdoor travel ideas where we could take Lucie with us and not leave her at home.

Again, you’ll need a subscription to the NYT to read this article. I thought I told you to get one last week?!

Happy Friday everyone! Friday couldn’t have arrived sooner…it’s been one of those work weeks.

A little history lesson & cultural tidbit for today.

Ancient cultures celebrated New Year’s Day on April 1. It closely follows the vernal equinox (March 20th or March 21st.)

In 1582, Pope Gregory XIII ordered a new calendar (the Gregorian Calendar) to replace the old Julian Calendar. The new calendar called for New Year’s Day to be celebrated Jan. 1.

In France, however, many people either refused to accept the new date, or did not learn about it, and continued to celebrate New Year’s Day on April 1.

Other people began to make fun of these traditionalists, sending them on “fool’s errands” or trying to trick them into believing something false.

The French came to call April 1 Poisson d’Avril, or “April Fish.” French children sometimes tape a picture of a fish on the back of their schoolmates, crying “Poisson d’Avril” when the prank is discovered.
