Book Review: Twilight

Filed under: KB Reads — kvr @ 6:05 pm

Yes…already.

Twilight (Twilight, #1) Twilight by Stephenie Meyer

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Curiosity is what got me interested in this book, but now it’s pure guilty pleasure indulgence that will get me reading the rest of this so-called, saga.

The story of Bella & Edward reads very quick – I was able to finish within a week – and without giving away the candy store for the remaining 2 people who haven’t read this – was quite tense at moments. I did pause and wonder why on earth it was taking almost 500 pages to tell this story of your typical teen-vampire romance.

The end was a bit hokey, but does set the stage for whatever the next book in the series is, which I will most likely read.

Verdict (post-Twilight): Team Edward

Book Review: Bad Mother

Bad Mother: A Chronicle of Maternal Crimes, Minor Calamities, and Occasional Moments of Grace Bad Mother: A Chronicle of Maternal Crimes, Minor Calamities, and Occasional Moments of Grace by Ayelet Waldman

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

As all you moms out there, you know that almost everyone in the world has an opinion, one way or another, on how you should be raising your child/children.

Bad Mother goes beyond explaining the adjustment to life with a baby/toddler and explores the struggles, victories and draws that a mom goes through raising a family this day in age.

Ayelet Waldman doesn’t hold back in this memoir – she’s honest, witty and covers a good many of the mom neuroses one may (or may not – yeah right) have.

All in all, it just reminds us supermoms out there to give each other a break (we’ve all been there) and most importantly to give ourselves a break…and a pat on the back because we’re doing the best we can and if you take issue with that, well, you can just stuff it.

Farewell 2009, Hello 2010!

Filed under: KB Reads — kvr @ 11:41 pm

Oh man. The last day of the year snuck up on me sooner than I thought it would. And now I’m trying to meet this self-imposed goal of one last post for the year. Damn you time, for moving along so quickly!

And, boy, is it moving quickly.

It’s that time of year where we all think about what we’re going to do (or not do) in the coming year to better ourselves (lose those last 10, 15, heck 30 pounds), better our lives (lose those last 10, 15, heck 30 pounds). Though, I try not to make resolutions…why set myself up for disappointment when I don’t meet those resolutions…I am resolving to not buy any new books for 2010 until I finish every single book currently on my nightstand AND to finish a book before starting a new one.

Seriously, I cannot see my alarm clock, as the pile of books is getting higher and higher – thanks to my Secret Santa for providing the latest additions to the pile.

At some point in 2008, I spent a small fortune at Books, Inc. buying a handful of books. Of the 4 that I posted at that point, I’ve finished only two of them. (Obama’s book and the Chez Panisse tome, if you must know.)

So, here are the books that are piling up…

Blink Blink by Malcolm Gladwell

The Canon: A Whirligig Tour of the Beautiful Basics of Science The Canon: A Whirligig Tour of the Beautiful Basics of Science by Natalie Angier

Spent: End Exhaustion and Feel Great Again Spent: End Exhaustion and Feel Great Again by Frank Lipman

The Widow Clicquot: The Story of a Champagne Empire and the Woman Who Ruled It The Widow Clicquot: The Story of a Champagne Empire and the Woman Who Ruled It by Tilar J. Mazzeo

A Friend Like Henry A Friend Like Henry by Nuala Gardner

Spinning Straw into Gold: What Fairy Tales Reveal About the Transformations in a Woman's Life Spinning Straw into Gold: What Fairy Tales Reveal About the Transformations in a Woman’s Life by Joan Gould

got this for my 30th bday from D and will be getting to it soon – should be interesting as my daughter is full on in the princess phase…

The Last Lecture The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch

The Omnivore's Dilemma The Omnivore’s Dilemma by Michael Pollan

Twilight (Twilight, #1) Twilight by Stephenie Meyer

yep, about the jump on this twilight bandwagon…

WordPress and Firefox are doing something funky with the layout – deal. I’m way too tired to figure it all out – perhaps I’ll fix it in 2010. Or not.

So to all, wishing you a healthy, happy and peaceful 2010. See you on the flip side!

“Buy Local, Buy Organic”

Alice Waters And Chez Panisse Alice Waters And Chez Panisse by Thomas McNamee

My review

rating: 4 of 5 stars
A fabulous insight to one of the most celebrated restaurants in the nation and the woman who is responsible for bringing Laura Chenel goat cheese to the masses!

As a somewhat foodie, I appreciated very much the history/beginnings of some of the Bay Area’s food stars: Jeremiah Tower (Stars), Steve Sullivan (Acme Bread) and Judy Rogers (Zuni Cafe) to name a few.

It does not get into the business side of things – which would have been an entirely separate book on its own – but rather details the slow food movement and the growth of the “buy local, buy organic” movement. The success/popularity of farmer’s markets today is all thanks to Ms. Waters.

This book will leave you craving a lovely french snack of crusty baguette and artisanal brie as well as a meal at the famous Chez Panisse.

Eat, Pray, Love: One Woman's Search for Everything Across Italy, India and Indonesia Eat, Pray, Love: One Woman’s Search for Everything Across Italy, India and Indonesia by Elizabeth Gilbert

My review

Slow to begin, it ended up being a quick read.

You’ll enjoy this memoir if you don’t take the author so seriously.

Though, it has gotten me interested in finding a guru and retreating to an ashram.

The ending and preview for her next memoir, left me warm and fuzzy – it’s a good thing.
